Dear MidTown Stakeholder,

350 projectJenie's Bridals & Formals and People's Funeral Service of Columbus have been a part of MidTown Columbus for over 100 years combined.  We are happy to be a part of this progressive community.Jenie's continues to provide excellent customer service and great selections in bridal and formal attire right in the heart of MidTown. We are ready to meet the needs of area brides and grooms as well as outfit those attending prom, military balls and formal events with beautiful dresses and tuxedos.  We plan to grow as MidTown grows, so be sure to listen out for upcoming events and exciting news for Jenie's in the days ahead.

At People's Funeral Service of Columbus, we believe the secret to the success of a service- oriented business is to know what to provide an individual in need, when to make it available, and how to assist them during the process of their need fulfillment. Making the final arrangement process as effortless as possible for the families we serve is number one.  Our location in MidTown Columbus helps us meet that goal.

Both Jenie's and People's are excited about the future of MidTown Columbus and all the people who make it what it is today. We proudly support the MidTown Business Association. Visit the MBA Website, view the MBA directory and become a member today.

Best Regards,

Public Meeting on Proposed MidTown Commercial Overlay District

Overlay Committee Work SessionMidTown's commercial district is located at the intersections of I-185 and Macon Road.  Many people know this area as the Cross Country Shopping Center/Kmart Shopping Center area.  For the past 18 months, property owners of that district, nearby residents, city officials and other stakeholders have been meeting to develop a draft Overlay Ordinance for the purposes of: 1) branding and defining the area; 2) encouraging positive investment, such as in-fill and street front development of the Macon Road area and 3) sustaining/protecting the stable neighborhoods immediately adjacent to the district.  Unlike other Overlay Ordinances you may have read about, this proposed ordinance is incentive based - encouraging landowners and investors by providing flexibiity in the development and city approval process and allowing more compatible land uses per zoning classification and higher density of retail and residential uses.  The ordinance also proposes enhanced building standards to improve the quality of construction and streetscape in the district. We will have a Public Meeting at the Main Library on Macon Road (in the CB&T Room) on Tuesday January 19th, 5:30 - 6:30, to review the draft ordinance and get your important input.  We hope you will view the map of the proposed district and ordinance by clicking here:PROPOSED ORDINANCE.  Please join us on Tuesday January 19th!

Supporting Local Business - MidTown, Inc. Pulls Out All the Stops
350 project
Buy local ads, television spots, speakers on the topic, chatter among friends... MidTown is spreading the word that local, independent businesses impact the lives of a community and it's residents in many ways. At times local businesses employ a teenager for his or her first job or they become the place where friends meet on a Friday night; however, from an economic standpoint, they are a mainstay of a community when what they contribute in the form of payroll, taxes, and other expenditures is considered.
MidTown, Inc. and the MidTown Business Association are galvanizing support for local businesses in several ways:
  • Earlier this year, an initiative known as the 3/50 Project was introduced to Columbus small business owners through a door-to-door collaboration between MidTown, Inc. and the MidTown Business Association (MBA) . WTVM followed along as businesses were delivered tabletop placards to remind them and their customers of the breadth of the economic contribution of local spending - that sixty-eight cents of every dollar spent at a local independent business remains in the community, representing a potential financial impact of nearly $40 milliion in Muscogee County in 2009 alone.
  • In a November MidTown-sponsored event, a Columbus Trade Center audience of 200 business owners, city officials, and consumers heard 3/50 Project founder Cinda Baxter's real-world advice for helping local communities boost their "buy local" campaigns: less than fifty-cents of the dollar spent at large retailers remain in the community, while '0' goes to your community when you buy from online retailers.
  • "Shop AT Home, not from Home!"  became a catchy mantra adopted from area local business proponent, Barbara Moushon, who inspired MidTown, Inc.'s Executive Director, Teresa Tomlinson's Buy Local call at the Chamber of Commerce's December Eye-Opener Breakfast. (pictured).  Attendees went away with a pocket-sized card containing the 3/50 Project principles- a constant reminder to "Choose 3 local shops. Spend $50 from your monthly budget at those shops. Save the local economy."

Emphasis on a Buy Local agenda will continue as MidTown moves into 2010. The aim is to encourage as many area consumers and businesses to use their purchasing power where it has the greatest local impact. Share your Buy Local experiences or stories by emailing info@midtowncolumbusga.org.
