Dear MidTown Stakeholder,
|
In August, I began as the Museum Shop Manager/Buyer and Volunteer Coordinator at the Columbus Museum. As a recipient of my business card once observed, "You nonprofit people sure have a lot of titles!" And, it's true; all of us at the Museum wear a couple of hats, sometimes more. To me, it is exciting to be part of the Museum. It's one of the largest and most respected in the state of Georgia, home to a renowned collection of American fine and decorative art and regional history objects as well as the beautiful Olmsted Gardens on its grounds. Visit our WEBSITE.
As many of you will you agree, the Columbus Museum, whose mission is to "collect, preserve, research, and interpret American art and regional culture for the education, enrichment and enjoyment of a broad and diverse public," is an important fixture in MidTown. The Museum Shop's proceeds, which support our educational programs, and our volunteers, who staff these programs and the Shop, help to fulfill this mission.
From books about art and local history to decorative objects and creative toys, the Shop's offerings span a wide range of interests and ages. Recent shipments include finely-woven purses and baskets that correlate with By Native Hands: Native American Basketry from the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, and steamboat kits that teach principles exhibited in Annotations: The Rebecca Everingham and Steamboating on the Chattahoochee. Of special interest are newly-arrived books, DVD/CDs that are by the speakers who have appeared at the Museum, such as the impressive Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon who will appear at the Museum Thursday, June 4th, 7:00 p.m. Additionally, the Shop's collection of everyday gifts, such as colorful tableware from the Savannah College of Art and Design, jewelry by Bree Richey, and earth-friendly toys, offer those of you who live and work in MidTown an easy way to pick up a gift, complete with complimentary gift-wrapping.
Our volunteers are another important part of the Museum, and we are always looking for new additions to the team. They work with children on arts and crafts projects and talk with visitors who come to browse in our shop. But most of all, our volunteers take part in the worthwhile endeavor of enabling the public to enjoy the enrichment and education that such an entity as the Museum provides.
Whatever hat you decide to wear to the Museum, shopper or volunteer, I hope that you'll take the time to support this particular part of MidTown!
The Columbus Museum is a member of the MidTown Business Association (MBA) and you can be too. Visit the MBA website, view the MBA directory and become a member today: MBA Web Page.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Morgan

| Wynnton Arts Academy - Annual Art Day |
The first Friday in May was a beautiful spring day in MidTown. Paper flowers were blooming and colorful butterflies were flying up and down Wildwood Avenue. May 1st was Wynnton Arts Academy's annual art day. Lasting all day, students Pre-K through 5th grade participated in artistic activities sponsored by people from the community. The event lasted all day with the students, by grade level, moving from station to station, engaging in different art-based activities.
The celebration included an "art walk" where the work of each child was displayed on the fence along Wildwood Avenue. Each class was taken outside to view their peer's artwork. Some of the community sponsored activities included face painting by the Junior League of Columbus, pottery by Bare Ware Pottery, and dance lessons from Hardaway High School cheerleaders.

| MidTown Updates - What's New and in the Works |
- MidTown, Inc. representatives head to Fort Knox, Kentucky with the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce in June 2009 to talk with military personnel, military consultants and their families transferring to the Valley area through BRAC about the benefits of living in MidTown Columbus.
- East Wynnton Neighborhood Directories are now available! If you are an East Wynnton resident and would like a copy of the directory, or would like for your information to be included in future versions of the directory, please contact MidTown, Inc. at (706) 494-1663. Other MidTown neighborhood associations desiring assistance in designing their own directory may call MidTown, Inc.
- A Steering Committee of 25+ MidTown property owners, investors and stakeholders are currently meeting to develop an incentive based overlay ordinance. This proposed ordinance will offer development cost-savings and increased options for profitability in order to encourage positive investment in the MidTown area. More information to come!
- MidTown, Inc., its stakeholders and the City of Columbus have recently completed a flood survey of the Lindsay Creek area. As a result, the City has petitioned FEMA to reassess the current designated flood area to more accurately determine those properties that are at risk and those that are currently and erroneously designated to be in a flood zone. MidTown, Inc. has also applied for $200,000 in grant monies and/or technical assistance to assess three flood zones in the MidTown area - Bull Creek, Lindsay Creek and Weracoba Creek. If awarded, these funds will go toward a public visioning and planning process to resolve flood issues that threaten property, to develop civic amenities that act as flood control devices (like parks, walking trails, etc.) and to create development opportunities where appropriate along these amenities.
- MidTown, Inc. and the City of Columbus have joined together to create what we hope is the first of many gateway-type projects at the Brown/Peacock Avenues intersection with Wynnton Road. This project should be completed by May 30th. We hope to have a full report and photos of the final product in our next newsletter. We are assured that the brick-stamped crosswalks at this intersection and the black-painted signal poles are on their way. We also look forward to reporting an update in our next newsletter related to the $1 million streetscape project along the Wynnton Corridor.
