Dear MidTown Stakeholder,
|
I have been interested in hair care for as long as I can remember. I initially delayed my dream of opening my own hair salon, to attend college and to work in the mental health profession. Following the death of my sister's husband, I relocated to Columbus to help her take care of her three young children. While my move to Columbus was intended to be temporary, I saw and seized the opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming a hair stylist. Following professional training, I worked for fifteen years as a stylist at Hair Designs. During that time (for some nine years), I traveled the country as a hair care educator for Paul Mitchell Systems. In 2003, I opened my first salon - Hair Works on Peacock - with my sister Charline. Two years later, we relocated to our current, larger salon - Hair Works on Wildwood, located at 1234 Wildwood Avenue, just off of Wynnton Road (next to MidTown, Inc. headquarters). In addition to sophisticated, stylish hair design, we specialize in eyebrow threading (an Indian eyebrow shaping technique), facial hair removal, personalized custom color, and hydrating treatments.
My love of children brought me to Columbus, and we continue to reach out to them by providing complimentary services to disadvantaged girls from the Ann Elizabeth Shepherd Home, Our House, Faith Home, Second Chance and Morning Star Foster Care Services. I enjoy being an entrepreneur, and especially the opportunities it affords us to give back to the community.
Hair Works on Wildwood is a member of the MidTown Business Association (MBA) and you can be too. Visit the MBA website, view the MBA directory and become a member today: MBA Web Page.
Best regards,
Cynthia Walker Redding

| One in a Million Celebration |
On a perfect October Sunday afternoon, MidTown residents and stakeholders from around Columbus came together to celebrate the milestone of having raised $1 million on our way to our $1.2 million fundraising goal to sustain our MidTown, Inc. community renewal efforts. (CLICK HERE to see our Champions Campaign Progress and Donors). With historic Wynnton Arts Academy as our backdrop, kids lined up to get free ice cream, the smell of popcorn permeated the air and all jammed to the bluesy beat of the Georgia All-Star Legacy Revue. As one attendee (Kat) said: "This was AWESOME! I really, really enjoyed myself; and, man, was the band on fire." Another (Walter) told us: "That was so much fun! My children didn't want to leave". Check out our Press Clippings; and, visit MidTown, Inc. page on Facebook to view pictures of the One in a Million Event.

| Shop and Dine in MidTown This Holiday Season |
|
The single most common question we get at MidTown, Inc. is: What can I do to help MidTown's revitalization. The answer is to spend your money here. Many get used to driving across town or across the river to shop at big box stores. While big box stores offer the benefits that big volumes can bring, your money goes back to the home state of the corporate owner of that business. In MidTown, we have more locally owned shops and eateries than anywhere else in Columbus. Think of your dollars as votes. If you think it is important to have local shops like Ann's Porch, Front Porch, Two Sisters Galleries, and William's Salon, and local restaurants like Meritage, The Butler's Pantry, Dinglewood, Speakeasy, and Suggas, then show it by spending your holiday dollars there. It helps MidTown also to shop the chainstores we have in this area. You can find what you need at Wynnton Hardware or K-Mart (on Macon Road). One MidTowner, Gail Lynch, recently explained her efforts to shop only in MidTown: "It's important to me that these shops stay here, close to my home; and, I can affect that by spending my money here". Here is the MidTown Challenge - Do all (or most) of your holiday shopping in MidTown. It can be done. Check out our Directory of MidTown Shops to assist you in locating that perfect gift or holiday dining opportunity. Also, look for our MidTown Business Association flags and decals. Support those that support MidTown. Share your MidTown holiday shopping or dining ideas on our Facebook Discussion Board or on our Talk It Up webpage.

| Snap Fitness Opens at Cross Country On the Hill |
|
Finding time to workout has become a lot easier for MidTown residents. Snap Fitness, a 24-hour fitness club providing fast and convenient facilities, has opened its newest location in Columbus at 2525 Auburn Avenue (the former Talbots site, just down from The Butler's Pantry and Finds and Consigns). As aging baby boomers, the owners Davey and Joy Solomon, realized some changes needed to be made in order to improve their quality of life, and Snap Fitness was a perfect fit.
Easier and more affordable than larger, "big box" health clubs, Snap Fitness offers a 24-hour a day, 365 day a year exercise alternative for busy individuals who want to stay active and fit without sacrificing time and convenience. "We're an alternative to the full-service clubs," said Joy (pictured above, left, with certified professional trainer, Quincy Johnston). "We offer the same state-of-the-art exercise equipment, but we are able to keep our membership costs low by eliminating services that a lot of on-the-go fitness club members may not need."
Pre-paid memberships start at roughly $1-a-day, with a $49 enrollment fee that will be waived to celebrate Snap's grand opening. In addition to offering the latest equipment, including elliptical machines, treadmills, free weights and plasma screen televisions, Snap Fitness will also offer tanning beds and personal training service. For more information about Snap Fitness contact our facility at 706-507-3488 or visit Snap's Website.

| Twenty New Homes in East Wynnton Park |
East Wynnton Park, a MidTown neighborhood, is the site of new affordable housing thanks to HUD Hope IV funding and a NeighborWorks Columbus initiative. On October 6, 2008, NeighborWorks and the City of Columbus celebrated completing 20 new East Wynnton homes ahead of time and on budget. The George Washington Carver High School drum line kicked-off the event, followed by opening remarks by NeighborWorks' Director Cathy Williams , congratulatory comments from Mayor Jim Wetherington and Congressman Sanford Bishop (pictured here with NeighborWorks' Cathy Williams), and entertainment provided by the Carver Vocal Quartet. Lunch and a tour of the beautifully decorated homes followed the ceremony.
The construction of these new homes was part of a $20 million grant received by the Housing Authority of Columbus, Georgia in 2002 for Hope VI HUD affordable housing. The homeownership project in East Wynnton Park provides an immediate source of housing for lower-income families; reinforces the significant revitalization efforts already underway in the East Wynnton Park neighborhood; and increases homeownership opportunities in a meaningful way.
