Dear MidTown Stakeholder,
|

Excitement is growing as we await the new Rigdon Road Elementary School (a.k.a. "The Great Little Learning Place"), which will be located in the heart of MidTown Columbus. Progress is made daily on the 2-story school building, which will serve over 650 students and provide up-to date facilities that will expand our educational services. The architectural design of the building will compliment that of the nearby Columbus main library. The new school also is expected to be close to other amenities like the new school administration and city services buildings, a natatorium for swimming competitions, a state of the art YMCA and a park.
At Rigdon Road School, we provide an educational environment where excellence is expected and "Failure is not an Option". Rigdon has a faculty that is dedicated to ensuring that all students reach their full potential. The school has been recognized by the Georgia Public Policy Foundation as a "No Excuses" school for outstanding achievement. Rigdon also is a National Blue Ribbon School and a Title I Distinguished School, and has been selected as the only stop in this region for the annual Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education Bus Trip.
Our new MidTown Columbus facility will provide a nurturing environment for our children where they will receive a great education, play and be kids. And, with the help of MidTown, Inc., they can grow up to be productive citizens in a neighborhood community they are proud to call home.
Dr. Phyllis Jones, Principal
Rigdon Road
Elementary School

| What Could Redevelopment Bonds Mean For MidTown and Columbus |
|
The Columbus City Council has voted to hold a citywide election (or referendum) on November 6, 2007 to determine whether Columbus, Georgia should have the authority to issue Redevelopment Bonds, which bonds help fund the revitalization of underdeveloped or at risk areas of our community. Currently, 48 out of 50 states throughout the country and numerous cities throughout Georgia use the Redevelopment Bond investment tool to encourage economic revitalization in stagnated areas. A public information effort regarding Redevelopment Bonds is expected to take place in the late summer and fall 2007.
Those interested in learning more about Redevelopment Bonds and how they might benefit MidTown Columbus, as well as many other areas of Columbus, please click on Redevelopment Bond Initiative .

| City Natatorium In MidTown Columbus |
|
You may remember having read in our May 2007 newsletter about the City's and the School Board's land swap agreement regarding property located at the Library/Sears site on Macon Road. Part of this exciting land deal is the City's pledge to place a competition natatorium (or swim complex) near the planned City Services Center on the Library/Sears site.
The anticipated natatorium is expected to be a state of the art, regional swim competition center, which will provide a much needed amenity to this community and will be an economic catalyst for the MidTown Columbus area generating the need for hotels and restaurants nearby. At the last meeting of stakeholders on Wednesday May 23, 2007, a natatorium needs list was proposed to include: a 10-12 lane 50 meter by 25 yard pool; a low and high diving board; electronic time boards and sound system; spectator seating for 600-800 people; therapeutic/warming pool; a play pool for young children; and compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. Depending on which items make it into a final plan, the natatorium is expected to cost between $7 -$10 million.

| MidTown, Inc. Selects Executive Director |
Interim Director Teresa Tomlinson has been named as the Executive Director of MidTown, Inc. and will fill that position starting June 2007. The MidTown, Inc. Board of Directors appointed Tomlinson as an interim director in December of 2005 to spearhead the newly created nonprofit organization, which succeeded the grassroots, community based revitalization and vision effort known as The MidTown Project.
Tomlinson took a leave of absence, from her position as a partner at the law firm Pope, McGlamry, Kilpatrick, Morrison & Norwood, LLP on July 1, 2006, for a one year period to head MidTown, Inc.'s inaugural year, while the board considered candidates to assume the full-time, permanent position. MidTown, Inc. President, Ed Burdeshaw states: "The board search committee was prepared to initiate a significant effort to identify a candidate that could continue the momentum that Teresa had begun. We were delighted to discover that she was interested in continuing in her role with MidTown, Inc. in the position of Executive Director. We know that her efforts are vital in implementing MidTown, Inc.'s mission". Tomlinson adds, "There is just so much potential here in MidTown Columbus. Positive changes are just beginning to happen. The excitement of being a part of this renewal was too tempting to leave".
Tomlinson will remain affiliated with the Pope, McGlamry law firm in an Of Counsel capacity. "While we will certainly miss Teresa, both personally and professionally, as a full-time member of our firm, we understand that at this time her heart is in Midtown. We are very pleased that she will continue to maintain a relationship with our firm. Midtown is an important project to this community and, as active members of the community, we are supporters of its efforts. We view our decision to support Teresa's decision as a meaningful contribution to Columbus", says Paul Kilpatrick, managing Partner of the Pope, McGlamry law firm. Tomlinson states, "The Pope, McGlamry family has been tremendously generous and supportive throughout this process. It is a tribute to their collective sense of community involvement that the partners have been flexible enough to allow this to happen". To view the Pope, McGlamry website click HERE .
