  • MidTown is home to 20,000 residents in over 8,500 households.   
     
  • MidTown is home to AFLAC’s international headquarters, which Fortune 500 company has recently announced the future addition of 2,000 new employees.

  • MidTown is a 10 minute drive from Ft. Benning. Pursuant to the federal Base Realignment Act, Ft. Benning is expected to add approximately 27,000 new residents to the region (5,000 officer level military personnel, 10,000 family members, and another 10,000 support personnel).

  • Six contiguous historic districts sit at the heart of MidTown. These historic districts comprise one of the largest contiguous historic districts in the United States.

  • Nine public schools lie in MidTown.  Wynnton Elementary School is the oldest, continuously used elementary school in Georgia and among the oldest in the country. 
     
  • More locally owned restaurants are located in MidTown than any other region of Columbus, Georgia.  
     
  • MidTown is one of eight National Trust/Knight Ridder Preservation Development Initiative communities nationwide. Other communities include: Philadelphia, PA; San Jose, CA; St. Paul, MN; Pontiac, MI; Miami FL; Macon, GA; and Duluth, MN. This distinction entitles MidTown to $150,000 in professional services toward revitalization and preservation efforts.  
     
  • MidTown, Inc. (through the City of Columbus) was the recipient of a $17,000 cash grant from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

  1. The Chattahoochee Riverwalk: This 14-mile multiuse path runs along the Chattahoochee River from Ft. Benning’s National Infantry Museum to the Lake Oliver Marina. Along the way bicyclists pass by Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center, the Civic Center, the Coca Cola Space Science Museum, Uptown Columbus, and Bibb City.

 

  1. Flat Rock Park Mountain Bike Course: This four-loop trail, a collaboration between the Columbus Cycling Club and Columbus Parks and Recreation Department, opened last summer and is already a favorite destination for mountain bikers across the region. Last fall this course hosted a SORBA sponsored mountain bike race.

 

  1. BRAG: Every June, 2000+ bicyclists join the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia. The route changes every year and frequently includes Columbus. In June, 2007, the ride starts in Columbus and ends in Savannah.

 

  1. Bicycle Events: Other annual organized rides in and around Columbus include Wheels O’ Fire, with routes between 25 and 68 miles near Pine Mountain and FDR State Park in March; Wheels to Heal, a benefit ride for the John Amos Cancer Center, 20, 68, and 100 miles in Columbus and Ft. Benning in April; and Fair on the Square, 20 and 50 mile routes around Lumpkin in October.

 

  1. Columbus Cycling Club: The Club is a crossroads for bicyclists in the region. It hosts a website and calendar (http://www.columbuscyclingclub.org) and works with the city government to improve cycling in the region. It is affiliated with the League of American Cyclists, the International Mountain Bike Association, and Georgia Bikes!

 

  1. Fort Benning: Recreational cyclists are attracted to this 182,000 acre Army Post for its miles and miles of safe, low-traffic roads.

 

  1. Bicycle Friendly Columbus: The City of Columbus is now pursuing Bicycle Friendly Community designation from the League of American Bicyclists. The streets of Columbus are already bicycle friendly, especially around Midtown and Uptown, where many people commute and run errands by bicycle.

 

  1. Warm Springs Trail: This multiuse path is in the final planning stages and will run along an old rail corridor from Uptown Columbus east to Flat Rock Park. It will pass by Columbus State University, Peachtree Mall, and Cooper Creek Park. Construction is planned to start in 2008.

 

  1. Columbus Bike Racing Team: The CBR is affiliated with the Columbus Cycling Club and competes in road bike and mountain bike events across the region.

 

  1. Pine Mountain/Callaway Gardens: Cyclists enjoy the low-traffic roads and beautiful scenery around Pine Mountain and FDR State Park. Nearby Callaway Gardens, with its 10-mile paved bike path, is especially attractive for family bicycle outings.
